United and Chelsea were linked
with Modric last summer before he completed a £33million move from Tottenham to
Real Madrid. But the midfielder has failed to impress at the Bernabeu, and
recent reports in Spain have suggested the player who was voted the worst La
Liga signing of 2012 could seek a move at the end of the season. Modric is
believed he is open to a return to England should Los Blancos decide
to sell, and according to The Sun, Chelsea-bound manager Jose Mourinho
wants to take the playmaker to Stamford Bridge with him.
Mourinho is said to be prepared to
pay £30million for Modric, but according to The People, the Croatia
international is also a target for new Manchester United manager David Moyes. United
are said to be preparing a £24m bid.
Modric recently admitted his move
to Spain had been "challenging", but international team-mate
Mateo Kovacic earlier this month insisted his friend is unlikely to leave the
Spanish capital when the transfer window reopens.
"He’s a phenomenal player,
but I think he’ll stay in Madrid," he told Sky Sport Italia. "It’s
great to play with him on the national team because he’s so talented, and it
would be great if he came to Inter Milan. But, again, I believe he’ll stay in
Spain."
